Can I be fired after maternity leave?

You cannot legally be fired because you took maternity leave or because you are a new parent. The FMLA generally protects your right to return to the same or an equivalent job, and the Pregnancy Discrimination Act and state laws bar pregnancy-based termination. An employer can still eliminate a role in a genuine, unrelated layoff – but firing tied to your leave or pregnancy is unlawful. Suspicious timing right after you return is a red flag.
