Alcoholism can be a protected disability under the ADA, but with important limits. The law may require reasonable accommodation (such as time off for treatment) and protects against discrimination based on the condition itself – yet employers can still hold employees to the same performance and conduct standards and can act on misconduct or being under the influence at work. Current illegal drug use is treated differently from alcohol.
