What is a hostile work environment?

Legally, a hostile work environment is more than a rude boss or a stressful job. It exists when unwelcome conduct based on a protected characteristic (sex, race, age, disability, religion, etc.) is severe or pervasive enough to alter your working conditions. A single serious incident or a steady pattern can both qualify. General unfairness, without a protected-class link, usually is not illegal harassment – even if it feels hostile.
