Wrongful termination means you were fired for an illegal reason. Pennsylvania and New Jersey are “at-will” states, so an employer can usually fire you for any reason or no reason – but not for an illegal one. Illegal reasons include discrimination (race, sex, age, disability, religion, pregnancy, national origin), retaliation for protected activity (reporting harassment, filing a wage claim, taking FMLA leave), refusing to break the law, or violating a written contract. If your firing falls into one of these buckets, you may have a claim.
